Sharp increase in DDoS attacks in third quarter 2024

The DDoS scrubbing center NaWas protects participants against DDoS attacks and provides insight into changing trends in DDoS. We are happy to share this knowledge to stand stronger together in the fight against DDoS attacks.

NaWas handled 688 DDoS attacks in the third quarter of 2024, a significant increase compared to the second quarter of 2024, when 419 attacks were mitigated. Although fluctuations in the number of attacks per quarter are normal, it’s notable that compared to the third quarter of 2023, the number of attacks has increased substantially, by over 35%.

While it remains to be seen if this increase will continue, there are signs that DDoS is becoming an increasingly popular tool among malicious actors and cybercriminals. According to the Threat landscape report 2024 by the European cybersecurity agency, ENISA, D(D)oS is now the number 1 cyber threat in Europe.

Also notable was that several new variants of attacks were observed in NaWas. These include a new type of DNS request flood attack and a variation of the UDP QUIC flood attack.
