December peak month for DDoS attacks on webshops
“A record number of DDoS attacks last year, especially in December.” That how the NOS News opened their evening broadcast on January 6. The total number of attacks was 15 percent higher than in 2017, according to figures requested by the NOS from NBIP and SIDN – following up on our impact report.
Webshops are and remain a popular target. And especially in December, a month in which webshops can lose significant sales by being the target of a DDoS attack. The impact of such a simple attack is then reasonably large. One of the causes: young people who are bored and therefore do mischief online.
DDoS attacks are therefore becoming increasingly easy to carry out. At the same time, it is becoming more difficult to fight this kind of criminal activity. This is of course because the attacks are becoming increasingly complex, as our DDoS trend report has already shown.
