DDoS attacks in Q4 2024

The DDoS scrubbing centre NaWas protects participants against DDoS attacks and provides insight into changing trends in the field of DDoS. We are happy to share this knowledge to stand stronger together in the fight against DDoS attacks.

NaWas handled 270 DDoS attacks in the fourth quarter of 2024. This is a remarkable decrease compared to the third quarter of 2024, when 688 attacks were mitigated. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2023 (559 attacks), there was also a decrease in the number of attacks. At the same time, complex attacks that are difficult to mitigate were regularly observed.

Fluctuations in the number of attacks are common from quarter to quarter. Looking at the last quarters of the past four years, 700 attacks were mitigated in the fourth quarter of 2021 for example. while in the fourth quarter of 2022, that number was 375 attacks.

DNS amplification remains the most important attack vector. We often see large amounts of DNS response traffic coming from Open DNS resolvers that reflect ANY responses from the sl. name space, which has a significant reflection vector.
